Eugene Giddens

Eugene Giddens is the Skinner-Young Professor of Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), situated within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, School of Humanities and Social Sciences. His expertise includes Renaissance drama, children’s literature, book history, and masculinity studies, with a focus on bridging textual scholarship and modern digital methodologies.

He holds a PhD in English from the University of Birmingham and a BA in English, summa cum laude, from Clemson University, South Carolina. His academic accolades include the Anglia Ruskin Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research (2015), the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Doctoral Supervision (2013), and the University Teaching Fellow designation (2012). He has also received prestigious fellowships, such as the Katherine F. Pantzer Bibliographical Fellowship from Harvard University (2016–2017) and the Marie Curie Research Fellowship (2017–2018).

Eugene’s research explores themes like textual editions of early modern works, global reception of Renaissance literature, and masculinity in Shakespearean plays. He has pioneered digital decolonization projects and collaborated with institutions like Homerton College, Cambridge, and the University of Florida on initiatives such as the AHRC-funded Digital Collections in Children’s Literature network.

His advising record spans 15 completed doctorates, including studies on children’s literature, early modern manuscripts, and gender representation. Key grants include the MHRA Research Associateship (£25,000, 2021–2022) and the AHRC UK-US Partnership Grant (£100,791, 2020–2021). He has also contributed to the Revels series and the Oxford Complete Works of James Shirley, underscoring his role in shaping literary scholarship through editorial leadership.
