Eugene Giddens is the Skinner-Young Professor of Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), located in Cambridge. He holds a PhD in English from the University of Birmingham and a BA in English (summa cum laude) from Clemson University. His research focuses on Shakespeare, Renaissance drama, children’s literature, the history of the book, and masculinity studies.
Professor Giddens has supervised 15 doctoral students to completion, specializing in Renaissance studies and children’s literature. His awards include the Anglia Ruskin Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research (2015) and the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Doctoral Supervision (2013). He has led significant research projects funded by the AHRC, British Academy, and others, including a £25,000 grant for The Cambridge History of Children’s Literature in English (2021-22).
His publications include edited volumes such as Hyde Park (Revels) (2022) and Christmas Books for Children (2019). He collaborates internationally on projects like The Oxford Complete Works of James Shirley (2017-25). His work bridges textual criticism, digital humanities, and cultural history, reflecting his commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship.
