Claire Jowitt is a Professor of Renaissance Studies in the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing and School of History at the University of East Anglia. She served as Associate Dean for Research (2015–2022), leading the Faculty's successful REF2021 submission. She holds visiting professorships at Southampton and Newman Universities. Her research focuses on maritime culture, early modern exploration, and cross-cultural encounters, with a major focus on the Gloucester shipwreck project, for which she received the Vice Chancellor’s Impact Award and London’s Freedom of the City.
Education: BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Southampton (1989).
Research interests include Renaissance literature, maritime history, colonialism, piracy, and shipwrecks. She leads the Leverhulme-funded Gloucester Project, curating exhibitions and publishing widely on maritime heritage. Grants include AHRC Impact Acceleration (2022–2026) and ESRC funding for coastal community partnerships.
Awards include the ESSE Book Prize (2012) and Fellowships from the English Association and Royal Historical Society. She chairs the Hakluyt Society Essay Prize and edits major series like the Routledge Companion to Marine and Maritime Worlds.
Key roles: Academic Lead for AHRC Impact Acceleration, Trustee of the Gloucester Charitable Trust, and Editorial Director of the Hakluyt Edition Project.
