Claire Chambers is a Professor of Global Literature at the University of York, specializing in South Asian literature, British Muslim narratives, and postcolonial studies. She holds a PhD from the University of Leeds and has held academic roles at Leeds Beckett University before joining York in 2012. Her research explores literary representations of Muslims in Britain and South Asia, Indian writing in English, and emerging interests in medical humanities. She has authored/co-edited numerous books, including Britain Through Muslim Eyes and Decolonizing Disease, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Chambers’ work spans grants from HEFCE, AHRC, ESRC, and the Leverhulme Trust. She has supervised over 20 PhD theses and currently mentors seven doctoral students. Her teaching emphasizes decolonizing curricula and intersectional feminism. She edits Translation and Decolonisation: Interdisciplinary Approaches and co-leads book series like Global Textualities. Recent projects include the Forgotten Foods anthology and research on pandemic narratives.
Externally, she contributes to literary festivals, media commentary, and advisory roles for journals like Mosaic. Her columns in 3 Quarks Daily and Dawn reflect her engagement with contemporary cultural and political issues in literature.
