Catherine Bates is a Research Professor at the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance, University of Warwick, where she specializes in sixteenth-century English literature and culture. Her research focuses on poetry, poetics, and courtly forms such as lyric, epic, and romance, with particular attention to figures like Philip Sidney, Spenser, and Shakespeare.
Her research interests include Renaissance poetics, gender and masculinity, psychoanalytic literary criticism, and the cultural significance of courtly forms. She explores how literary language intersects with identity, power, and desire in early modern England, often drawing on interdisciplinary methods from psychoanalysis and cultural history.
Her recent publications span topics from Sidney’s Defence of Poesy to Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis, reflecting a sustained engagement with literary theory, textual interpretation, and the symbolic dimensions of Renaissance literature. The articles demonstrate a consistent focus on language, subjectivity, and cultural performance, with strong emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches.
