Clare Kinney is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on early modern British literature, particularly 16th-17th century texts, genre studies, medieval and Renaissance literature. She holds a Ph.D. from Yale University (1984), an M.A. (1982), and B.A. (1979) from Cambridge University.

Her research examines narrative strategies in Chaucer, Spenser, Milton, and Eliot, with a focus on romance genres, poetic dialogism, and gendered authorship. Recent publications analyze Mary Wroth's subversive narrative techniques, Sidney's poetic influence, and Ovidian transformations in early modern women's writing.
Key trends in her recent articles include: critical reassessment of Renaissance romance genres, gendered approaches to textual editing, Ovidian mythological reinterpretation, and analysis of manuscript circulation networks in the Sidney circle.
