Catherine Bates is Research Professor in English and Comparative Literary Studies at the University of Warwick and Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of English Studies. She specializes in English Renaissance poetry.
Her research examines Sidney's Defence of Poesy, Shakespeare's sonnets, and cultural representations of masculinity in early modern literature. Current projects investigate intersections of poetry and economic concepts like usury.
Publications include award-winning monographs on poetic defenses and masculinity, plus edited collections on Renaissance poetry. Fellowships include residencies at the Huntington Library and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
