Robert Matz is Professor of English at George Mason University in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, specializing in early modern literature with particular expertise in Shakespeare and Renaissance drama. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Association of Departments of English and the Folger Institute, and from 2019 to 2024 as dean of George Mason University's campus in Incheon, Korea.
Matz's research focuses on early modern literature, Shakespeare and Renaissance drama, gender and sexuality studies, and Renaissance poetic theory. His scholarly work examines the social context of literary theory in early modern England, Shakespeare's sonnets, and the intersection of literature with historical marriage practices and gender roles. He teaches courses on sixteenth and seventeenth-century English literature, including specialized courses on Shakespeare's histories, comedies, tragedies, romances, and sonnets.
His publications reveal a consistent trajectory exploring the intersections of literature, social context, and theoretical frameworks in Renaissance England. Matz's work demonstrates particular interest in how literary forms engage with contemporary social issues, especially regarding gender, sexuality, and authority.
