Prof. Anne Keirse is a Professor of Private Law at Utrecht University and a part-time judge at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal. She directs the Utrecht Center for Accountability and Liability Law (UCALL). Her research focuses on Dutch and European law of obligations, including tort law, contract law, compensation law, and damage prevention. She holds editorial roles in journals such as Contracteren and Utrecht Law Review, and is active in organizations like the European Group on Tort Law and the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law.
Education: Born in 1975, she studied law at the University of Groningen, earned her doctorate there in 2003, and held academic positions at Groningen and Radboud University Nijmegen before joining Utrecht in 2008. She was a visiting professor at the University of the Free State (South Africa, 2013–2014) and the University of Cyprus (2018).
Professional Activities: She has been involved in the judiciary since 1998, working part-time as a judge since 2019. She chairs workshops and conferences on liability and insurance law and contributes to policy discussions on legal frameworks for accountability. Her research emphasizes leveraging private law to incentivize socially desirable behavior, prioritizing prevention over retribution.
