Prof. Ivo Giesen is a Professor of Private Law (specializing in Tort Law and Civil Procedural Law) at Utrecht University’s Molengraaff Institute for Private Law. As of September 2024, he serves as Director of the Scientific Research and Data Center (WODC) in The Hague while maintaining a part-time affiliation with Utrecht University. Previously, he held leadership roles including Head of the Utrecht School of Law (2019–2023), Research Director (2017–2019), and Program Leader of the Utrecht Center for Accountability and Liability Law (UCALL, 2013–2017). His research focuses on liability law, empirical legal studies, and interdisciplinary approaches to legal problems, emphasizing creativity and boundary-crossing solutions.
Education & Career: He earned his PhD in Law from Tilburg University (2001) and held academic positions at Tilburg before joining Utrecht in 2004. He has also served as an honorary appellate judge at the Court of Appeal in ’s-Hertogenbosch (2006–2024) and held visiting roles, such as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Rhodes University (2008).
Research & Engagement: Giesen’s work bridges law with psychology, sociology, and economics. He co-founded the Molengraaff Dispuut and led initiatives like the ‘Think Tank Simplified Claims Handling’ (2020–2023). His research themes include civil liability, procedural law, and the societal impact of legal decisions, as seen in his contributions to journals like the Dutch Journal of Civil Law and Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Burgerlijk Recht.
Awards & Recognition: His honors include election to KNAW (2011), KHMW (2017), and being named Utrecht University’s Teacher of the Year (2012). He has advised numerous PhD students and remains active in academic governance, including leadership roles in the Law Deans Group of LERU and the Dutch Judicial Council’s advisory committees.
Current Roles: As WODC director, he focuses on policy-relevant legal research, while continuing academic engagement through editorial roles (e.g., Dutch Journal of Civil Law) and memberships in organizations like the KNAW and Montaigne Centre.
