Prof. François Kristen is a Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at Utrecht University’s Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology, part of the Faculty of Law, Economics, and Governance. He leads the Utrecht Centre for Accountability and Liability Law (UCALL), focusing on liability law’s societal role. His expertise spans European criminal law, financial crimes, and legal accountability.
Education: Studied Dutch law at Tilburg University, specializing in criminal law and corporate law. Earned a cum laude PhD (2004) with research on European law’s prohibition of insider trading abuse. Awards include Tilburg’s Best Dissertation (2005).
Research: Explores European legal integration’s impact on national systems, special criminal law (e.g., insider trading, money laundering), and procedural law. Projects include civil damages recovery in criminal proceedings and corporate social responsibility’s legal dimensions.
Leadership: Served as UCALL Program Leader until 2022 and Chair of the Willem Pompe Institute (2010–2013). Since 2022, he is Research Director of the Department of Law. Active in media commentary on legal issues like cassation law and driver responsibility after accidents.
