Renée Kool is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University's Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance, specifically affiliated with the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology. She is a senior member of the Utrecht Centre for Accountability & Legal Liability Law (UCALL), an interdisciplinary research institute connecting researchers across the Law Faculty to study accountability and legal liability from multiple perspectives.
Her research focuses on the intersection of civil and criminal law, particularly regarding compensation for tort and crime. She has published extensively on vice law, cultural offenses, discrimination, victims' rights, and restorative justice. Her work often examines the criteria for criminalization and procedural justice, with particular attention to sexual offenses, victim compensation mechanisms, and the boundaries of criminal law in addressing social issues.
An analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the evolving relationship between victims' rights and criminal justice systems. Her work demonstrates increasing attention to restorative approaches within criminal proceedings, the legal definitions of sexual offenses (particularly regarding consent), and the theoretical foundations of victim compensation. Her research shows a strong interdisciplinary approach, integrating legal theory with criminological insights and empirical research on justice perceptions.
Professor Kool has maintained an active research and publication profile since joining Utrecht University in 1999, following her earlier position at Erasmus University's Criminal Law and Criminology Department. Her work has significant practical implications for legal reform and criminal justice practice, particularly in the Netherlands but also in the broader European context.
