Anne-Jetske Schaap serves as Assistant Professor in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at Utrecht University's Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology, while also contributing to the Utrecht Centre for Accountability and Liability Law (UCALL) as a core team member. Her institutional affiliations include the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance and the Department of Law at Utrecht University.
Dr. Schaap earned her doctorate with honors in February 2022 for her groundbreaking research on the criminal liability of legal entities, specifically analyzing the 'Drijfmestkader' (driving manure framework) as a guiding structure for corporate criminal responsibility. Her dissertation was published in the UCALL Series (volume 22). She completed her Bachelor of Laws (LLB hons. cum laude) at Utrecht University in 2013 and her Legal Research Master's degree (LLM cum laude) in 2016, specializing in criminal law. During her academic journey, she studied at both the University of Valencia and the University of Cambridge.
Her research program centers on substantive criminal law with three interconnected pillars: corporate criminal liability frameworks, human trafficking prosecution, and accountability mechanisms for transnational business operations. Dr. Schaap has developed significant expertise in how Dutch criminal law can address modern slavery in global supply chains and irresponsible corporate conduct abroad. Her work often bridges theoretical legal analysis with practical implementation challenges faced by prosecutors and courts.
Recent publications reveal an evolving research trajectory from foundational work on the Drijfmest framework toward broader applications in climate accountability and transnational human rights protection. Her 2024 edited volume 'Corporate Accountability and Liability for Climate Change' represents a significant expansion of her research scope, connecting corporate criminal liability principles to environmental justice.
- Katadreuffe Prize for the 'most remarkable Utrecht law student' (2015)
- Visiting Scholar at University of Oxford (2019)
Dr. Schaap actively contributes to academic governance as program and OST coordinator for the Master's program in Criminal Law.
