Dr. mr. Marlou Overheul is an Assistant Professor at the Molengraaff Institute for Private Law, Utrecht University School of Law, affiliated with Utrecht Centre for Accountability and Liability Law (UCALL) and the Empirical Research into Institutions for Conflict Resolution (ERI). She holds a PhD (2025) in Law with a dissertation analyzing compensation schemes for occupational diseases through legal and empirical lenses.
Her research focuses on liability law, damages law, and procedural justice. Key projects include studying 11 occupational disease compensation schemes via 58 interviews and surveys, and interdisciplinary work on politically sensitive cases and public trust in the judiciary. She has received a KLI grant (2022) and was nominated for the Katadreuffe Prize (2016).
Overheul actively organizes academic events such as the 2024 'Multidimensional Private Law' conference and participates in high-profile discussions on occupational disease compensation, non-pecuniary damages (e.g., fear/shock), and climate-related corporate liability. She frequently presents at national/international forums, including the UCALL Climate Liability Conference (2022) and AV&S Symposium (2022).
