Professor Gwyneth Davies is a leading academic in Health Data Science at Swansea University's Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science. She serves as the founding Director of the Wales Asthma Observatory within the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank and leads the UK Postgraduate Training Programme for Asthma Researchers (Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research). As an Honorary Respiratory Consultant at Swansea Bay University Health Board, she leads the Asthma service and has received a Bronze Clinical Excellence Award from the Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards (ACCEA) for 2019-2024. Professor Davies' research spans from translational work in asthma 'omics to population health research, with a current focus on respiratory informatics. Her work leverages big data approaches to examine the burden and costs of asthma, the impact of socioeconomic factors on respiratory outcomes, and the use of electronic health records to reduce inequalities in care. She has made significant methodological contributions to identifying asthma patients in routinely collected data and examining the relationship between air pollution, educational outcomes, and respiratory health. Her recent publication portfolio shows a strong emphasis on respiratory health research, particularly asthma and COPD, with increasing focus on the intersection of respiratory conditions and the COVID-19 pandemic. Her work consistently demonstrates methodological rigor in analyzing large-scale health datasets to address clinically relevant questions about disease patterns, healthcare utilization, and intervention effectiveness. Bronze Clinical Excellence Award (ACCEA, 2019-2024) Scadding-Morriston Davies UK Joint Fellowship in Respiratory Medicine Professor Davies actively supervises postgraduate students, currently guiding a PhD student researching asthma inequalities alongside Prof Rich Fry, and previously supervised an MSc student on respiratory pathogens in COPD exacerbations with Prof Ronan Lyons (2023). Her leadership of the UK Postgraduate Training Programme for Asthma Researchers indicates substantial research funding and commitment to training the next generation of respiratory researchers. She collaborates extensively across the UK and internationally on major studies including the national longitudinal COVIDENCE study. As founder and director of the Wales Asthma Observatory within the SAIL Databank, Professor Davies leads a significant research infrastructure for respiratory health analysis. Her work involves close collaboration with colleagues across respiratory medicine, epidemiology, and informatics to translate data insights into clinical practice improvements, with particular focus on reducing health inequalities in respiratory care through evidence-based interventions.
