Dr. Thomas Wright is a Clinical Doctoral Fellow funded by the NIHR Manchester BRC and a Specialty Registrar in Clinical Genetics at the University of Manchester's Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. He is actively engaged in research through the Manchester Rare Conditions Centre (MRCC), where he participates in the MRCC Academy, Banka Lab, and Spin Lab (Studying Plasticity in Neurodevelopment). His clinical work is conducted through Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, where he has been serving since April 2021.
Wright's educational background includes a Master in Science in Human and Molecular Genetics from The University of Sheffield (2020), a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education from the University of Edinburgh (2019), Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (2018), an Emergency Medicine Certificate from the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (2017), and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Hons) from the University of Liverpool (2013).
His research focuses on utilizing routinely collected population health data to enhance understanding of rare conditions and mental health outcomes. Wright's work spans genomic medicine, epidemiology, and data science with particular emphasis on neurodevelopmental disorders. He has made significant contributions to research on non-coding RNA genes, autism spectrum disorders, and genetic diagnosis outcomes in children with developmental disorders.
His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the intersection of rare genetic conditions and mental health, with recent work examining RBL2-associated neurodevelopmental disorders, CHD8 missense variants, and non-coding RNA genes related to autism. This research trajectory shows increasing sophistication in analyzing complex genetic data to understand neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Wright receives supervision from leading academics including Dr. Shruti Garg, Prof. Sid Banka, Prof. Roger Webb, Prof. Daren Ashcroft, and Dr. Matthew Carr. His research is supported by multiple funding sources including the NIHR Manchester BRC. He is an active member of several professional organizations including the General Medical Council, Royal Colleges of Physicians, British Society for Genetic Medicine, UK Cancer Genetics Group, European Society of Human Genetics, and American Society of Human Genetics.
Through the Spin Lab, Wright investigates brain plasticity in neurodevelopment using advanced brain imaging and computational methods, with the goal of developing personalized treatments to support learning in children with rare genetic conditions. His work bridges clinical practice with cutting-edge genomic research to improve outcomes for patients with rare conditions.
