Gerome Breen is a Professor of Psychiatric Genetics at King's College London, leading the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and the NIHR Mental Health BioResource. He specializes in psychiatric genetics, focusing on affective disorders, psychosis, and eating disorders. His work emphasizes discovering biological bases of psychiatric disorders to improve drug development and clinical trial approaches. Breen chairs the PGC Anorexia and Eating Disorders group and co-leads the GLAD study on anxiety and depression genetics. He is actively involved in international consortia like the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) and organizes industry meetings to bridge genetic research and pharmaceutical innovation.
His research includes the Eating Disorders Genetic Initiative (EDGI), aiming to recruit 10,000 participants in England to advance understanding of eating disorders' genetic basis. Breen's contributions span genomic analyses of bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and Alzheimer’s-related depression, leveraging large-scale datasets (e.g., >1,000,000 individuals). He collaborates on multi-omics studies and validates biomarkers for conditions like ALS, emphasizing translational research.
Key projects include the NIHR Mental Health Mission (Mood Disorder Stream) and a UK Biobank mental health enhancement study. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing mental health challenges. Breen’s publications focus on genetic associations, pathway analysis, and biomarker discovery, with recent studies exploring genomic links between eating disorders and suicidal ideation.
