Mattias Hjerpe is a Senior Associate Professor at Linköping University's Department of Thematic Studies (TEMA), specializing in environmental change and climate policy. He holds a PhD in Environmental Studies (2005) and a Docent title from Linköping University (2012). His research focuses on urban climate change adaptation, governance of climate transitions, and the role of non-state actors in international climate negotiations. He leads the International Negotiation Survey (2007–present) and is affiliated with the Centre for Climate Science and Policy Research (CSPR). Key research areas include climate adaptation in built environments, resilience of municipal welfare services, and collaborative frameworks between property owners and municipalities. Current projects address governance of climate adaptation goals in Swedish agencies, multifunctional stormwater management, and climate robustness in socially critical infrastructure. His work bridges theory and practice, informing policies through tools like vulnerability assessments and participatory frameworks. Publications emphasize practical solutions for flood adaptation, housing resilience, and policy implementation challenges. Hjerpe collaborates with the UN Climate Secretariat and international policymakers, contributing methodologies such as governance profiles and survey-based analyses of climate negotiators. His interdisciplinary approach addresses systemic barriers to climate transitions, emphasizing pragmatic strategies for scaling-up adaptation efforts.
