Prof. Çiğdem Toparlı is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey. Her research focuses on electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, and energy conversion/storage systems, particularly in designing corrosion-resistant materials and improving battery and hydrogen production technologies. Post-doctoral studies at MIT (2018-2020) and Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH (2017-2018) Ph.D. at Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH (2017) M.S. and B.S. at Istanbul Technical University (2013 and 2011) Her research interests span electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, and materials chemistry, with a focus on corrosion resistance, energy systems, and interfacial phenomena. Recent work investigates multicomponent oxides for Zn-air batteries and water electrolysis, emphasizing oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions. Publications highlight in situ and operando spectroscopic techniques to study surface oxides and corrosion mechanisms. Key trends in her publications include surface engineering for corrosion resistance, electrocatalyst design for energy systems, and interfacial analysis in aqueous environments. Her group at METU explores dendrite-free zinc anodes, high-entropy perovskite oxides, and material stability under electrochemical stress. Her lab at METU collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, including metal-air batteries and hydrogen production systems.
