Prof. Hubert Gasteiger holds the Chair of Technical Electrochemistry at TUM School of Natural Sciences, Technical University of Munich. His research focuses on developing materials and electrodes for lithium-ion batteries, PEM fuel cells, and electrolyzers using ex situ and operando diagnostics to understand performance limitations and aging mechanisms.
He completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering at UC Berkeley, followed by research positions at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of Ulm, and leadership roles at General Motors. Since 2010, he has been a full professor at TUM.
Research Interests: His group specializes in electrocatalysis, materials development, and degradation phenomena related to electrochemical energy systems. Key areas include lithium-ion battery degradation processes (gas evolution, particle cracking), all-solid-state battery development, PEM fuel cell/electrolyzer catalyst optimization, and advanced diagnostic techniques.
Research Trends: Publications demonstrate consistent focus on electrode architecture optimization, catalyst durability enhancement, and degradation mechanism elucidation. Recent work shows increasing emphasis on operando characterization methods and solid-state battery technologies.
