Lindsay Richard Merte is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Applied Mathematics at Malmö University, Faculty of Technology and Society. His research focuses on the composition, structure, and properties of solid surfaces, nanomaterials, and ultra-thin films, with applications in catalysis and corrosion science. He employs advanced synchrotron X-ray techniques and scanning probe microscopy for operando and high-precision surface characterization.
His research interests include:
- Surface and interface science under technologically relevant conditions
- Operando characterization of catalytic and electrochemical processes
- Development of methods for studying solid/liquid interfaces
- Structural analysis of passive films and surface oxides
- Nanomaterials for energy and industrial applications

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on using operando X-ray spectroscopy to investigate surface changes during catalytic and electrochemical reactions, particularly in harsh environments. The work spans fundamental surface science and applied materials engineering, with emphasis on industrial alloys and model systems for energy conversion processes such as water electrolysis.
Lindsay Merte is actively involved in academic leadership as Director of Studies for the national research school PRISMAS, coordinated by MAX IV Laboratory. He teaches courses in materials science and experimental methods, contributing to advanced training in physical characterization techniques.
His research is supported by major Swedish funding agencies, including the Swedish Research Council and the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. He collaborates extensively with Lund University (NanoLund, Synchrotron Radiation Research), Chalmers University of Technology, and industrial partners like Alleima. He is affiliated with the Biofilms Research Centre for Biointerfaces at Malmö University, highlighting interdisciplinary engagement at the interface of materials and life sciences.
