Dr. Yoonjoung Choi is a Lecturer in Korean at Durham University, affiliated with the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. She specializes in Korean language instruction, literary translation, and comparative literature. Her roles include Convenor and Assistant Teaching Fellow of Korean, teaching stage 1 and 2 modules. She is a professional freelance interpreter/translator (Korean English) and member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists. Dr. Choi holds a PhD in English from Durham (2008) and a PG CAP in Academic Practice. Her research bridges Korean and British cultures, focusing on literary and cultural transactions. She has extensive experience in legal, medical, and artistic translation projects, and has interpreted for global conferences featuring figures like former UK Prime Minister John Major. Her publications include reviews, edited volumes, and scholarly chapters on comparative literature, Victorian Gothic, and H.G. Wells. She co-edited We Speak a Different Tongue: Maverick Voices and Modernity 1890–1939 and translated operatic works into Korean. Dr. Choi serves as External Examiner for Korean language courses at the University of Manchester and contributed to international academic events like the 60th International Astronautical Congress. Her current projects include a translation of Sin Cha Hong’s Excuses for Freedom , a seminal work on Korean avant-garde dance. She balances academic teaching with professional translation, emphasizing cross-cultural understanding through language and literature.
