Sara Lampert is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of South Dakota, where she also coordinates the Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies program. With a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Michigan (2012, 2007) and a B.A. from Rutgers (2004) in History and Art History, Dr. Lampert has established herself at the intersection of early American history, gender studies, and cultural performance analysis.

Her research explores 19th-century gender dynamics through theatrical performance, focusing on how female celebrities navigated patriarchal structures in American theater. Her book Starring Women (University of Illinois Press, 2020) examines transatlantic theater culture and celebrity gender politics from 1790-1850. Current research includes Leg Show: Ballet, Burlesque, and Female Spectacle in the Civil War Era.
Dr. Lampert's 15 most recent publications cluster around gender performance in antebellum theater, celebrity culture analysis, and historical parallels to modern gender dynamics in entertainment. Her grant portfolio demonstrates institutional support for these themes across multiple venues including American Antiquarian Society fellowships.
