Sharla M. Fett is the Robert Glass Cleland Professor in American History at Occidental College, with affiliations in the History, Black Studies, and American Studies departments. She specializes in 19th-century Atlantic World slavery, the antebellum U.S. South, and intersections of race, gender, and health.

Her research explores global post-emancipation struggles, focusing on Liberated Africans in the trans-Atlantic slave trade suppression era and their parallels to modern refugee policies. She also investigates Black women's roles in antebellum health and healing practices.
Recent publications include her books on recaptured Africans and a student-researched exhibit on California's Colored Conventions. Her work bridges academia and community through partnerships with organizations like Black Women for Wellness and the Southern California Library.
She teaches courses such as 'Slavery and the Antebellum South,' 'Women and Community Health,' and 'Race, Rights, Revolution in the Atlantic World,' often incorporating Los Angeles cultural institutions like the Mark Taper Theater.
Current projects include a Digital Humanities initiative on Liberated Africans and research into African American engagement with the Congo region in the 19th century.
