Robert Murray is an Associate Professor of History and Associate Dean for General Education at Mercy University's School of Liberal Arts. His research focuses on 19th-century African American history, Atlantic World studies, and the intersections of slavery, emancipation, and unfreedom. He currently leads a project examining hemp production's role in antebellum economies and Black farmers' economic agency.
Dr. Murray's recent work includes Atlantic Passages (2021), analyzing Liberian colonization and racial formation, and articles on topics like Centre College's historical narrative and medical practices among Liberian settlers. His Journal of the Early Republic article won the Ralph D. Gray Article Prize.
In teaching, he offers American history surveys and methods courses. He actively contributes to public history through board membership at the Westchester County Historical Society and integrates animal studies perspectives into his scholarship.
