Robert Gudmestad is a Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Colorado State University, located in the College of Liberal Arts. He specializes in American South studies, the Civil War, military history, and sport history. His research employs innovative methods like GIS spatial analysis and collaborates with students to compile databases, such as the 16,000-sailor dataset from the Union Mississippi Squadron. Gudmestad holds a PhD from Louisiana State University and has authored several books, including Steamboats and the Rise of the Cotton Kingdom and the forthcoming The Devil's Own Purgatory on Civil War naval strategy.
His teaching includes undergraduate courses on the American survey, Civil War Era, and American Sport History, along with graduate seminars. He actively mentors graduate students in American and digital history, advising thesis-track students and serving on thesis committees. Notable collaborations include co-authoring articles on emancipation demographics and military history with students like Evan Cocanower.
