Dr. Robert K. Grala is the George L. Switzer Professor of Forestry at Mississippi State University's Forest and Wildlife Research Center (FWRC). He holds a PhD in Forestry from Iowa State University, an MS in Environmental Science from the University of Manchester, and an MS in Forestry from Warsaw Agricultural University. His research focuses on forest economics, community development through forest resources, carbon sequestration economics, and valuation of non-market ecosystem services. Dr. Grala is actively involved in agroforestry research, particularly windbreak systems' economic impacts. His educational background includes diverse institutions across three continents, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to forestry challenges. Recent research has addressed wildfire management, landowner decision-making in conservation programs, and bioenergy potential from forest residues. Dr. Grala's work bridges ecological and socioeconomic dimensions, with notable contributions to: Evaluating landowner willingness-to-pay for wildfire mitigation Assessing carbon sequestration program feasibility Analyzing spatial patterns in ecosystem service valuation He collaborates extensively with institutions like the Southern Forest Economics Workers and maintains active membership in professional societies such as the Society of American Foresters. Dr. Grala advises graduate students including Sushma Bhattarai and has secured research funding addressing critical forestry issues in Mississippi and the southeastern U.S.
