Stephen Fitzgerald is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources & Management at Oregon State University. His educational background includes an M.S. in Forest Management from University of Idaho (1983), B.S. in Forest Biology from SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry (1979), and A.A.S. from Holyoke Community College (1976).
Research focuses on fire ecology and forest management, with emphasis on: (1) Restoration of ponderosa pine ecosystems; (2) Early seral habitat development; (3) Silvicultural systems for resilience; and (4) Fire management strategies. His applied research informs practical solutions for landowners and managers.
Educational programs address reforestation, thinning practices, forest health, wildfire management, and backyard woodland stewardship. Recent publications demonstrate increased focus on carbon management strategies, smoke management protocols, and homeowner wildfire risk reduction. Extension materials frequently translate complex fire science into practical land management guidance.
