Bonnie L. Youngs is a Teaching Professor of French & Francophone Studies and Director of the M.A. in Applied Linguistics & Second Language Acquisition program at Carnegie Mellon University's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Her work focuses on integrating technology and AI into language education while addressing pedagogical challenges. She has held administrative roles including Director of Undergraduate Studies and advisor for the Applied Multilingual Studies program. Her research interests include applied linguistics, intercultural competence, and improving learning outcomes through technology. She has contributed to the development of online language courses and virtual learning environments (e.g., Second Life applications for teaching). Awards include the Barbara Lazarus Mentoring Award (2019) and Elliot Dunlap Smith Award (2012). She actively serves on university committees such as the Dietrich College AI Support Committee and General Education Steering Committee. Her teaching spans elementary to advanced French courses and methodological courses like Teaching Methodologies for the Foreign Language Classroom . Dr. Youngs has been affiliated with the Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics since 1993, contributing to curriculum design and interdisciplinary collaborations within the college.
