Dan Nickolai is an Associate Professor of French and Director of the Language Resource Center at Saint Louis University's College of Arts and Sciences. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. and M.A. in Romance Language Pedagogy and French from Saint Louis University, and a B.S. in Computer Science from Webster University. He has over 15 years of experience in French instruction and instructional technology, advancing from Instructor (2008–2016) to Assistant Professor (2016–2021), and currently holds leadership roles in both education and technology.
His research focuses on educational technology, CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning), and language proficiency assessment. Notable projects include the $325K NEH-funded iSpraak platform for pronunciation instruction and the OER-based Friend or Faux? textbook. He has secured grants totaling over $340K for digital humanities and language education initiatives.
Dr. Nickolai is actively involved in professional organizations like IALLT (serving as President since 2023) and has authored/co-authored over 20 publications. His work emphasizes integrating speech-to-text technologies, such as ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition), into language learning. He has presented globally on topics like pronunciation instruction, technology-driven pedagogy, and adaptive assessments.
He has received prestigious awards including the 2024 James H. Korn Scholarship and the 2019 Robert Henderson Memorial Award. Beyond academia, his technical expertise spans full-stack web development, with projects like SLUPE (adaptive placement exam) and Collocationizer (language collocation tool).
