Dr. Yi Zhu is a Senior Lecturer in East Asian Studies at the School of Languages, Arts and Societies, The University of Sheffield. Her research focuses on the interplay of emotion, power, and discourse in cross-cultural organizations, particularly within East Asian multinational companies. Prior to joining Sheffield, she taught at universities in Japan and Lancaster University, specializing in business anthropology, culture and management, and international human resource management.
Her research group, Critical Ethnography in East Asia, explores organizational dynamics through an anthropological lens. Key research interests include cultural conflicts in multinational corporations, sustainable corporate culture, and identity politics in globalized business environments.
Dr. Zhu has published widely in areas such as organizational ethnography and cross-cultural management, including her 2023 monograph Corporate Culture and Globalization: Ideology and Identity in a Global Fashion Retailer. Her work bridges business anthropology with practical organizational challenges, emphasizing the role of discourse and emotion in shaping corporate practices.
Teaching activities include courses on business anthropology and international management, reflecting her commitment to linking academic research with real-world organizational issues. She is affiliated with Jessop West on campus and can be contacted at yi.zhu@sheffield.ac.uk.
