Xinlin Yang, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on bone and cartilage biology, targeting orthopedic disorders such as osteoarthritis, bone fractures, and intervertebral disc degeneration. He investigates Fpr1-mediated macrophage activation and stem cell differentiation, and explores nanomedicine (C60) for bone disease treatment.
Dr. Yang's education:
- B.S. in Biology, Beijing Normal University (1987)
- Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology, Beijing Normal University (1992)
Dr. Yang's research spans bone biology, cartilage biology, immunology, and nanomedicine. He studies the role of formyl peptide receptor 1 (Fpr1) in macrophage activation (M1/M2 polarization) and mesenchymal stem cell differentiation. His work also investigates the therapeutic potential of antioxidative nanofullerene C60 for bone diseases. Key research areas include osteoarthritis, bone fracture healing, and intervertebral disc degeneration, aiming to develop innovative regenerative therapies.
Scientific awards:
- Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation Award
Dr. Yang has mentored over 100 students and junior researchers. His research is funded by:
- Principal Investigator: National Science Foundation of China, NIH SBIR grant, Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation award
- Co-investigator: NIH/NIAMS, AO Foundation, NASS Foundation
As a research faculty member in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UVA, Dr. Yang collaborates within interdisciplinary teams focused on musculoskeletal research and regenerative medicine.
