Keita Ito is a Full Professor of Orthopaedic Biomechanics at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), with a joint appointment at University Medical Center Utrecht. His research focuses on musculoskeletal tissue regeneration, particularly intervertebral disc degeneration mechanisms and regenerative strategies. He chairs the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group, combining engineering and biology to understand tissue adaptation and develop therapies.
Academic Background: Dr. Ito holds an MSc (1987) and ScD (1994) in Medical Engineering from MIT, followed by an MD (1995) from Harvard Medical School. His career includes postdoctoral roles at the AO Research Institute (Davos) and TU/e, where he became Full Professor in 2007.
Research Interests: Intervertebral disc degeneration, biomaterials for tissue engineering, mechanotransduction in musculoskeletal systems, and ex vivo/experimental models for disc regeneration. His work emphasizes bioreactor systems and numerical simulations to study degenerative processes.
Labs/Teams: Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center (EMTEC), ICMS Core (Complex Molecular Systems), and the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group at TU/e. Collaborates with industry on biomaterials (e.g., NC Biomatrix B.V.) and clinical translation.
Teaching: Leads courses on bone structure, soft tissue biomechanics, and tissue engineering. Involves in the DBL Functional Tissue Repair program and graduate education.
