William Lai is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). His research focuses on the fundamental mechanisms of gene regulation, integrating DNA sequence, chromatin dynamics, and RNA interactions to understand transcriptional decision-making in eukaryotic organisms.
- PhD in Biochemistry, SUNY Buffalo
- Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience, University of Pittsburgh
Utilizing a combination of classic biochemistry, next-generation sequencing, and machine-learning approaches, Lai investigates gene regulation in model systems including yeast, mouse, and human. His work addresses how disruptions in these biological networks lead to disease phenotypes by analyzing conserved eukaryotic genome features.
Lai is affiliated with the Pugh Lab, the Center for Eukaryotic Gene Regulation, the Protein Capture Reagents Program Validation, and the Yeast Epigenome Project. In 2022, he received a seed grant to support interdisciplinary disease-related research across Cornell campuses.
