Vincent Gautrais is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Montreal and a researcher at the Centre de recherche en droit public (CRDP). Since June 1, 2015, he has held the L.R. Wilson Chair on Information Technology Law and Electronic Commerce. Previously, from 2005 to 2015, he held the University of Montreal Chair of Excellence in Security and Electronic Business Law. He teaches courses in business law and technology law at the University of Montreal.
His educational background includes a Doctorate in Law (LL.D.) with Dean's Honor List distinction (top 5% of theses), a Master of Laws (LL.M.), and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Montreal, as well as a Master's and Bachelor's in Business Law from the University of Rennes 1 in France.
Gautrais is a leading expert in information technology law, electronic commerce, cyberconsumption, online dispute resolution, intellectual property, and privacy law. His research focuses on the intersection of law and technology, particularly examining how legal frameworks adapt to digital transformations. He has published extensively on topics such as technological neutrality in legislation, electronic evidence, metadata, and personal information circulation in Web 2.0 environments. His work addresses critical challenges in digital governance, data protection, and the regulation of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain.
His recent publications reflect a strong focus on contemporary digital challenges, including AI governance, mobile payment regulation in Africa, behavioral advertising, and children's privacy protections. His work demonstrates a consistent theme of examining how traditional legal concepts adapt to digital environments while balancing innovation with consumer protection.

Gautrais has supervised over 25 doctoral and master's students, focusing on cutting-edge topics in digital law. His research projects include significant funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Quebec Research Funds (FRQSC), with current work examining AI governance, digital decolonization in the OHADA region, and cybersecurity frameworks. He leads the Regroupement droit, changements et gouvernance and is actively involved with the Centre de recherche en droit public, the International Centre for Comparative Criminology, and the Integrated Network on Cybersecurity (SERENE).
