Dr. Trevor Hamilton is a Professor of Psychology at MacEwan University, with adjunct positions at the University of Alberta's Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute and a visiting scholar role at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (University of California San Diego). He holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Alberta and a B.Sc. in Psychology from McGill University. His teaching focuses on courses such as Applied Neuropharmacology, Brain and Behaviour, and the Neuroscience of Climate Change.
Dr. Hamilton's research centers on zebrafish and cichlid learning, memory, and anxiety, particularly in the context of environmental stressors like ocean and freshwater acidification. His lab investigates the effects of CO2-induced acidification on fish behavior, novel behavioral assays for learning/memory, and pharmacological influences on fish behavior. Recent work includes studies on cannabinoid impacts, terpene modulation of anxiety, and the neurobiological responses to climate change.
His publications span high-impact journals like Nature Climate Change and Proceedings of the Royal Society B, with a focus on behavioral neurobiology and ecotoxicology. Awards include a NSERC Discovery Grant (2014-18) for CO2-induced behavioral changes in freshwater fish. He collaborates widely, contributing to Campus Alberta Neuroscience and the Society for Experimental Biology.
Dr. Hamilton supervises undergraduate and independent study students on projects involving zebrafish behavior, climate change impacts, and psychopharmacology. His zebrafish laboratory at MacEwan serves as a hub for interdisciplinary environmental neuroscience research.
