Marian Wong is a Researcher at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, collaborating with Dr. Sigal Balshine. She holds a PhD in Marine Biology from James Cook University (supervised by Drs. Philip Munday and Geoff Jones) and a BA in Zoology from the University of Cambridge, U.K. Her research focuses on understanding the evolution of social and reproductive behaviors in fishes, using species like the coral-dwelling goby (Paragobiodon xanthosomus) and the African cichlid (Neolamprologus pulcher) as models. Key topics include monogamy, group-living dynamics, conflict resolution, cooperative behavior, social aggression, and molecular correlates of social behavior.
Her work bridges experimental approaches with evolutionary theory, addressing how environmental and social factors shape behavioral adaptations. While affiliated with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (2005–2022) at James Cook University, she contributed to coral reef ecosystem research but now focuses on freshwater and African cichlid systems at McMaster University.
Marian’s research has implications for understanding biodiversity maintenance and adaptive strategies in changing environments. She has engaged with interdisciplinary teams and contributed to high-impact media releases, such as studies on climate change impacts on fisheries and coral reef biodiversity loss.
