Tim Sterner Miller is a Teaching Professor in the Music Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), serving as Area Head for Music History & Literature and Director of the Early Music Ensemble. He holds a PhD and MA in Musicology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, an MM in History of Musical Instruments from the University of South Dakota, and a BM in Music Theory/Composition from the University of Delaware.
His research focuses on musical instruments, their design, and the communities that engage with them, with notable publications in Grove Dictionary of American Music and the Oxford Handbook of Country Music. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on Renaissance/Early Modern music, 20th/21st-century art music, popular music, and world musics, emphasizing historical/cultural contexts. Miller directs the UWM Collegium Musicum, exploring medieval-to-baroque repertories, and contributes to Milwaukee’s cultural scene through program notes and advocacy with organizations like Early Music Now.
Musically, he performs on instruments ranging from symphonic bass and lute to Hindustani sitar and banjo, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to music history and practice.
