Ted Conner is a Professor of Music in the Department of Music at Muhlenberg College, where he teaches courses including History of Symphony, Opera, World Music, History of Jazz, Music History Seminar, Music Senior Seminar, Counterpoint, and the First Year Seminar Musical Revolutions. He is based in the Center for the Arts, Room 253.
His research spans Early Music and Jazz performance practices, combining scholarly analysis with active musicianship. As Artistic Director of Nights Black Bird, he performs viola da gamba and lute repertoire across the Northeastern United States, while leading the award-winning Ted Conner Quartet as guitarist and guitar synthesizer player. His editorial work reconstructs 17th-century music through critical editions of John Moss’s Lessons for the Basse-Viol (1671), Robert Jones’s The Second Booke of Songs and Ayres, and John Playford’s The Division Violin.
Dr. Conner directs two institutional ensembles: Muhlenberg’s Collegium musicum for early music performance and the Jazz Improvisation Ensemble. His upcoming publication, Volume I of The Works of Tobais Hume (Dovehouse Publications), continues his focus on restoring obscure historical compositions. Though specific awards remain unnamed, his quartet’s recognition underscores artistic excellence in contemporary jazz performance.
