Bruce Bales is a Lecturer at the Conservatory of Music, part of Chapman University’s College of Performing Arts. He serves as Director of the CU Early Music Ensemble and instructor of Medieval/Renaissance Music History. Previously, he held roles as Director of Choral, Vocal, and Early Music at Golden West College (1992–2020) and taught choir, voice, and co-directed the Collegium Musicum at UC Irvine. He is an active performer on early music instruments (viols, lutes, cornetto, sackbuts, recorders, crumhorns, hurdy-gurdy) and as a baritone soloist.
His expertise spans Early Music performance practices, with a focus on Renaissance and Baroque eras. He regularly leads honor choirs, guest lectures, and adjudicates festivals in Southern California. Notable achievements include serving as Artistic Director for the 2006 Haut Alps Choral Festival and receiving the 2010 Huntington Beach Arts Counsel’s “Arts Educator of the Year” award.
Besides teaching, Bales engages in community outreach through workshops and collaborations, emphasizing historical performance traditions. His career reflects a deep commitment to early music education and performance.
