Thomas Parchman is a Professor of Music at the University of Southern Maine (USM) and has served as Principal Clarinetist of the Portland Symphony Orchestra since 1984. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from the University of Southern California, a Master of Music from Northwestern University, and a Bachelor’s in Music Education and Performance from Southern Methodist University. His teaching focuses on American popular music and ethics in music, including courses like MUH 329: Devils, Dwarfs, and Dragons: Anti-Semitism in Music, which examines ethical dimensions of musical works and their historical contexts.
Professionally, Parchman is deeply involved in orchestral performance, serving as Orchestra Manager and Principal Clarinetist for Opera Maine. His career began with early training in Memphis, including a notable performance in Verdi’s Aida with the Metropolitan Opera. He actively performs with the Portland Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, and recitals across New England.
Academically, he contributes to USM’s governance as a Faculty Senate representative and former chair, influencing institutional policy and academic direction.
