T. Barton Carter is a Professor of Media Science at Boston University, specializing in communication law and new communication technologies. He formerly held leadership roles as head of the Law Division at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and the Law and Policy Division at the Broadcast Education Association. He retired from legal practice but continues academic work.
Education: BA from Yale University, MS from Boston University, JD from the University of Pennsylvania. He teaches communication law and telecommunication regulation, with a focus on First Amendment issues, media access, and legal implications of emerging technologies.
His research explores libel, privacy, obscenity, and policies around the Patriot Act and social media. He co-authored textbooks including The First Amendment and the Fourth Estate and Mass Communication Law in a Nutshell, and has written extensively on media law topics.
