Patrick File serves as Associate Professor of Media Law and Graduate Director at the Reynolds School of Journalism, University of Nevada, Reno. His academic foundation includes a Ph.D. and Master's from the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Prior to academia, he worked in journalism, including award-winning reporting in Iowa and New York, an internship at the Student Press Law Center, and ESL instruction in South Korea.
His research examines the evolving relationship between journalism, law, and technology, with emphasis on:
- Historical legal discourse in media (libel, privacy, telegraph-era press freedom)
- First Amendment applications in modern protests and digital contexts
- Government transparency mechanisms like public records laws and anti-SLAPP provisions
- Ethical boundaries in photojournalism and anonymous sourcing
His publications reveal a consistent focus on legal-journalistic tensions across three eras: 19th-century libel law evolution, 20th-century privacy debates, and contemporary digital challenges. Work frequently employs historical analysis to critique modern press freedoms and regulatory frameworks.
Service contributions include founding presidency of the Nevada Open Government Coalition, editorial roles for the Journal of Civic Information, organizing the Reynolds School First Amendment Forum, and advising the Kappa Tau Alpha honor society. He teaches courses like The First Amendment and Society and Public Records Laws for Accountability Reporting.
