Samantha Barbas is a Professor of Law and the Aliber Family Chair in Law at the University of Iowa College of Law, joining in 2024. Previously, she served as a faculty member at the University at Buffalo School of Law (2011–2024), directing the Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy. She holds a JD from Stanford University (2010) and a PhD in History from the University of California, Berkeley. Her career includes a judicial clerkship with Judge Richard Clifton of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Barbas specializes in legal history, First Amendment rights, and media law, producing award-winning scholarship. Her research examines intersections between journalism, privacy, defamation, and constitutional law. Notable works include Actual Malice (2023), analyzing the landmark New York Times v. Sullivan case, and Newsworthy (2017), exploring privacy and press freedom. She has authored seven books, featured in major publications like The New Yorker and The New York Times Book Review.
Her accolades include the National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar Award (2020) and a silver medal in the Independent Publisher Book Awards (2017). A sought-after speaker, Barbas delivers lectures for organizations like the Library of Congress and contributes commentary on libel and First Amendment issues to outlets such as the Washington Post and USA Today.
