Heather Murray serves as the Associate Director of the Cornell Law School First Amendment Clinic and Managing Attorney of the Clinic’s Local Journalism Project, where she co-teaches seminars on free speech and press freedom while managing litigation, counseling, and training for journalists nationwide.

Her expertise centers on First Amendment litigation, specializing in government transparency, press freedom advocacy, and defamation defense. She actively combats threats to journalism through strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs), public records disputes, and representation of news organizations in high-stakes constitutional cases.

Murray supervises staff attorneys, summer fellows, Clinic students, and alumni co-counsel while overseeing grant reporting for the Local Journalism Project. She extends her advocacy through ProJourn’s advisory committee (Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press) and chairs Forestdale, Inc.’s board—a Queens child welfare agency. Her recent work includes suing the NYPD over license-plate defacement transparency and defending Mississippi Today against a retaliatory defamation suit by a former governor.
The First Amendment Clinic’s Local Journalism Project, under her management, provides critical legal infrastructure for journalists challenging government secrecy and corporate litigation threats across the United States.
