Susan E. Seager is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law and head of the Press Freedom Project within the Intellectual Property, Arts, and Technology Clinic. She holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and has extensive experience as a journalist and media law attorney. Her work focuses on defending independent journalists, advocating for press freedom, and advancing government transparency through legal advocacy.
Education: J.D., Yale Law School (1999); prior career as a journalist for publications including the LA Weekly and LA Daily Journal. Professional experience includes roles at Fox Entertainment Group (2007–2016) and media law firm Davis Wright Tremaine. She also teaches media law at the University of Southern California.
Research Interests: Legal protections for journalists, First Amendment rights, unsealing court records for public interest reporting, and legislative advocacy for press freedom (e.g., California SB 98). Her Press Freedom Project provides pro bono legal services to independent media, documentary filmmakers, and press advocacy groups, making it the only West Coast law clinic dedicated to this field.
Recent Work Highlights: Successfully unsealed juvenile court records for a Netflix documentary on child welfare failures, secured disclosure of police misconduct records for Prison Legal News, and advised on the Vanessa Marquez police shooting investigation. Her Guardian Award (2022) recognizes contributions to press freedom through these efforts.
