Dean Todd Pettys serves as the H. Blair and Joan V. White Chair in Civil Litigation and Professor of Law at the University of Iowa College of Law. He joined the faculty in 1999 after clerkship at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and private practice at Perkins Coie LLP in Seattle. His career includes roles in academia, law, and administrative leadership, including assistant director of Duke University’s Capital Campaign for the Arts & Sciences.
Pettys holds a BA from Seattle Pacific University (1988) and JD from the University of North Carolina School of Law (1995). His teaching focuses on Constitutional Law, Federal Courts, and Supreme Court litigation seminars.
His research emphasizes First Amendment rights in educational contexts, judicial decision-making, and Supreme Court trends. Notable works include analyses of student speech protections, obscenity law, and free expression in contentious environments. He frequently discusses legal developments on media platforms like Iowa Public Radio and Bloomberg Law.
Pettys’ scholarship spans over two decades, with over 40 publications analyzing civil cases, constitutional history, and judicial ethics. His writing often bridges theoretical constitutional principles with real-world legal challenges, particularly in education and public policy domains.
