Sue Johnson is a Professor of Art at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, affiliated with the Department of Art & Art History and the Environmental Studies Program. She specializes in Printmaking, Painting, Drawing, Installation Art, and the Art of the Book, with a focus on Scientific and Natural History Illustration.

Johnson’s research explores the intersection of art, science, and cultural history through projects like Symmetrical Bodies and Hall of Portraits from The History of Machines. Her work employs Trompe l’oeil and Vanitas traditions to critique consumer culture and material abundance. She integrates interdisciplinary themes, including archaeology, literature, and environmental studies.
Her exhibitions, such as American Dreamscape and The Nature of Curious Objects, have been showcased internationally. Trends in her articles emphasize still life, curatorial innovation, and symbolic narratives.
