Perry Johnson serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Art, Craft & Design at Tennessee Technological University, where he has taught since 1999 while maintaining an active professional practice in web development and programming.
His educational background includes:
- MFA in Painting & Printmaking from East Tennessee State University
- BFA in Printmaking from Virginia Intermont College
Johnson's artistic research bridges traditional and digital media, utilizing egg tempera and oil paint alongside laser engraving and self-developed software. His work critically examines communication technologies through series like Ellipsis Interrupted (currently exhibiting in Malaysia through May 2025), Taut Twine & Tin Cans, and Drowning in the Cloud. He investigates how technological interfaces affect human connection and empathy, often deconstructing physical supports to reflect communication fragility.
Johnson has exhibited extensively including at Asia School of Business (Malaysia), Masur Museum, Manifest Gallery, and Dogwood Arts Festival. His technical innovations include custom drawing software that responds to stylus pressure/tilt and Velostat-based press calibration systems for printmaking.
He shares specialized knowledge through detailed material recipes (casein paint, oil mediums) and has taught small classes from his home studio as featured in A! Magazine.
