Stephanie Deumer is a Canadian visual artist and Lecturer at the University of Washington, Seattle, specializing in digital art and new media. Her work investigates intersections between science, technology, and gender, particularly focusing on feminine identity, environmental art, and cyber feminism. She holds a BA from the University of Guelph (2011) and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts (2015), and was a Whitney Independent Study Program Fellow (2018-2019).
Deumer’s research explores how biological, visual, mechanical, and social reproduction shapes gender constructs. Notable projects include Under the Same Sun (2022), a solar-powered installation in Saudi Arabia that cultivates native plants using live video projections, and Photosynthetics (2021), critiquing gendered narratives in nature. Her work has been exhibited globally, including in Canada, the U.S., the UK, Ecuador, and Saudi Arabia.
She has received grants from the California Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Her 2023 installation Under the Same Sun was nominated for Arch Daily’s Building of the Year Award. Deumer teaches digital art and new media at the University of Washington, emphasizing experimental techniques and interdisciplinary approaches.
